Why Your Business Requires Security

The States and Federal Identity Theft and Privacy Protection Laws now require businesses, agencies and organizations of all sizes to protect all personal information they store, and report to all their customers whenever a breach occurs. The financial ramifications after having a data breach can be very substantial to both present and future business. In some many cases a company never does recover from a breach and is forced to close down. Currently, the average cost on a company is $3.7M per incident.

ID Security Tip #1: Car Rental Security


When your employees travel to other cities they will probably rent a car. Car rental companies are helping to prevent identity theft by hiding some of the renter’s personal information on the contract. While showing only a few digits of the driver’s license, the rental car agreement will show the renter’s club membership number, rental contract number and other important information. Using social engineering techniques and a few well placed calls, a data thief may obtain vital information about the renter that can lead to their identity being stolen and fraudulently used; or worse, a corporate data breach.

After renting a car, be sure the employee brings back the rental agreement and have them attach it to their trip report. After confirming the agreement, shred the document. If the employee does not need to turn in the agreement, then instruct them to always bring back and shred their rental car agreement. Never throw the agreement into any garbage can, and just tearing up the agreement first ususally is not enough. Be sure to use a cross cut shredder for the best protection.
